Oh My DIY: Denim + Lace Shirt

17 May

Image from A Beautiful Mess

This season we’ve been loving demin mixed with lace! We decided to give this trend a try with a cute DIY top! Here’s how:

What you’ll need:

  • Denim or chambray button-up shirt
  • Lace
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Sewing pins

Steps:

  1. Cut out the back of the shirt. You’ll want to leave about 1/2 inch from the seam so that you can stitch the lace directly on the seam line.
  2. Using the back of the shirt as a pattern, cut out a new back in lace.
  3. Next, turn the shirt inside out, pin the lace where the original back was, and sew into place. Because you left a 1/2 inch of fabric, it’ll be easier for you to sew it to where the seams are in the inside.
  4. Once you’ve sewn it in place, hem the bottom of the lace.
  5. All done! The stitching shouldn’t be showing and will line up with the original seam!

Tip: Go slow and sew/pin each turn one at a time. This helps to keep the lines crisp!

Make Your Own Detachable Collar!

Photo from kryzuy.com

  1. Look for a collared shirt.
  2. Using your scissors, cut the collared part of the top, using the neckline seam as a guide.  Be careful with cutting though, you wouldn’t want to ruin your collar!
  3. Decorate it! You can use whatever you want–lace, glitter, sequins, paint, stencils– anything! Just be creative!
  4. Once you’re done designing the collar, wear it! Detachable collars are perfect with anything.
